The Tropical Andes are one of only a handful of mountains with cloud forests in the world and although cloud forests cover less than 1% of the Earth's surface, collectively they contain about 15% of the planet's known biodiversity, with more species yet to be discovered. Biologist Ruben Dario says published research shows a decrease in cloud forests in the region over the last 100 years. Cloud forests have become fragmented and degraded because of agriculture and land purchases.
