Misuse of fertilizer a threat to global biodiversity

Scientists in South Africa are warning about the potential dangers associated with phosphorus fertilizers towards global biodiversity. Although essential for plant growth, phosphorus fertilizers can be damaging to local ecosystems. Scientists say when the substance is overused, it’s washed from fields into lakes and oceans along with sewage runoff and causes algae blooms and aquatic dead zones, threatening fish biodiversity.
