The loss of a child is possibly the worst thing that can happen to any human being. Psychological experts claim that the trauma caused by this loss is so damning and has adverse effects such as depression and in worst cases suicide. According to the  United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, Under-five mortality in Kenya has fallen from 102 deaths per 1,000 live births in 1990, to 43 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2019. However, every year, 64,500 children still die before reaching the age of five, mostly of preventable causes. Three quarters of these deaths occur before a child’s first birthday.

Award wining comedian and radio presenter Nick Chege alias Kartelo is one of the parents who have had to endure this tragedy. Speaking at a radio station, the comedian revealed that he lost his first born child while he was still in secondary school. He revealed that the pregnancy was marred in secrecy and he had not even informed his parents.

Comedian Mulamuah who found Kartelo when he went missing

The radio host revealed that his baby did not leave the hospital, she died shortly after birth. This experience was so unbearable for him because he had given his all and was going through financial problems, he was broke because he had been sacrificing so much for the child. On the same show he revealed that being blessed with another child is the only thing that eased the pain for him. The presenter acknowledged that ever since he got another child he felt the burden ease.

A few months ago Kartelo was off social media for a while which prompted  fellow comedian Mulamuah to look for him after his fans raised concern over his whereabouts. After being found Kartelo revealed that he had taken a break to look after his new born daughter who was only one year old at the time. Loosing a child is a cruel experience and we can only hope that those who have gone through the trauma get to heal.
