Liverpool new boy, 23-year-old Diogo Jota’s masterclass last night showed us the impact he can make in Liverpool’s already brilliant forward. The Portugese international scored his first hat trick for Liverpool as they obliterated Atalanta by 5 goals to none in their 3rd champions’ league group match.
Jota becomes the quickest player to reach 7 goals for Liverpool since the year 2000 and the club's top-scoring player from Portugal. Liverpool stay at the top of their group and are now sure to get to the knockout stage. They have collected nine points from a possible nine at the start of their 2020/21 UCL campaign.
Jota opened the scoring in the 16th minute, chipping home over Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Sportiello after receiving a through pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold. He then doubled Liverpool's lead just after the half-hour mark with a superbly taken effort. Jota then netted the current Premier League champions' fifth goal early in the second half, securing a comfortable win for the Merseyside reds.
Away from the Champions League, Jota had scored three times in his previous three appearances for the Reds. With this consistency he has broken two club records. Diogo Jota became the quickest player to reach 7 goals for Liverpool since the year 2000. He has taken only 10 games to reach 7 goals with the other players on the list being Fernando Torres and Mohamed Salah, who took 12 and 13 games respectively.
Jota, only the sixth Portuguese player to wear Liverpool's famous red jersey, has also now become the club's top-scoring player from the south-west European nation. The forward arrived at Anfield from Wolverhampton Wanderers in September for a reported transfer fee of £41 million (over KSh.5bn). With his 7 goals so far, the Portuguese international beats the record previously set by midfielder Raul Meireles in 2011.
Diogo proves to be budding into a key player in Liverpool’s efforts to keep the English Premier League title. They are currently leading in the table with 16 points, seven games into the league.
