A life of a shuga babe.
Meet Elvis Adhiambo, 30 years of age and in a serious relationship with an older woman, not his first however, this started five years ago. Jobless and out to look for a provision, Elvis who was a Dj by profession just fresh from campus, got a job at a movie shop. He met an older lady who was a loyal customer and a platonic relationship began. This however blossomed into a romantic relationship with the then married woman. He also claims, he met her husband, who barely knew of the ongoing behind the scenes. Elvis was getting a comfortable life, from paid rent to a new movie shop and with this, he ended up liking a lady younger than him. Then the chaos happened when the ‘’shuga mommy’’ found out! He was back to zero, but now, he is in his second sugar-mom relationship. I guess old habits die hard.
Unlike Elvis, Janet Irisha got a sugar daddy through heartbreak. Janet, 22 years of age met her ’BAE’, 52 years of age, when she was in form two. She had just been dumped by her then boyfriend after finding out she was expectant. The man who has picked her up from almost attempting suicide, now caters for and her daughter and is planning to buy the orphan’s grandparents a house. The two are in a deep and serious relationship. ‘’if he proposes, I will immediately say yes, I know most people say why I would even date such an old person but they don’t know what I see in him.’’ She joyfully says.
Why these choices?
Dayan Masinde, a relationship counselor, ‘’First of all, you are not a sugar babe, if you are 30 years. You are a fully grown man! The only mama should be your mom.” He tells Elvis. The counsellor enlightens us that most of these people all start with a need, wanting help, financially and, or, something else. Also, being in vulnerable situation such as Janet. It eventually leads to the older person feeling like they owe the one in need. Sometimes it might be both parties using each other!
