What was your status at 21 years of age? Most people will say they did not even understand their own existence but while you were sleeping, others were up and grinding.

Starling technologies CEO, Daniel Mureithi, at only 21 years old, started his company. His passion for ICT drove him out of the village and into the interiors of Nairobi city.

He had no funds, just an idea and the thirst to bring it to life.

The making of Starling (Startech) Technologies

His journey began when he decided to use his then marketing skills to get clients. He saved up fifteen thousand shillings which he used to buy his first computer.

Living in a bedsitter, trying to make ends meet, his clientele build-up gave him confidence to start starling technologies. Currently called Startech Technologies.

He did the marketing himself. Daniel went all out to print and distribute business cards even before he registered the company.

What the company does

Daniel has hired seven programmers so far. Whom he says, when hiring, he had to scrutinize their resumes and go through their social media.

Startech Technologies now works with corporates, the government as well as private individuals. They deal with matters, websites, mobile applications, systems and software.

Challenges that came with starting the company

Mureithi recalls episodes of rejection from companies and clients. Cash flow was also an issue then but he managed against all odds. He has five mentors whom he says, help prevent him from making wrong decisions.

His advice: As a young person, you need to understand who you are. Identify what you are passionate about and go for it. Look for mentors and ensure you gain something different from each one of them.
