Monica Star - Brenda Wairimu

Brenda Wairimu is finally actualizing her dreams. Just recently she bagged two awards: Lake International Pan-African Film Festival (LIPFF) 2019 Best Actress - Kenya and WFA 2020 Best Actress during the African Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards.

Brenda stars on popular local drama Monica (airs every Monday at 8PM on Switch TV) among other popular local productions. To the public, Brenda’s life is picture perfect; young, beautiful and successful in her craft. This is bettered by the fact that she is one of the most easily recognizable celebrities in the country.

It has not been easy.

Brenda has been through a lot in her relatively short life. At just 30, she has lost both of her parents, loved and lost and is a single mother of one. She recently unveiled her best kept secret of almost half a decade; baby daughter Amor.

I lost my dad when we began the shooting of KONA, and my mom after that. During Disconnect and especially SUBIRA, my relationship was taking blow after blow, and a lot of misinformation was going round about it. It was a blessing to be able to be someone else, whose life was laid down on a script, whose outcome was certain.” She said.

Her acting career offered her a much needed escape from reality when the going got tough. Brenda opened up in celebration of her latest achievements in the awards.

You know how they say artists perform their best, when they are at their worst? These trophies mean a lot to me, it’s taken almost a decade to get here…and its true, when my personal life was at its worst, my art thrived, it was/is my escape.”

My alternate reality...

She concluded her confession by thanking the film industry for giving her an opportunity to be somebody else; a character whose outcome was certain.

I think what I am trying to say is artists are human too, life happens to us, we love, we mourn, we make mistakes, and we do it all in front of a million and one eyes. This is very cliché to say, I know. But thank you to you all, and for Art and Film for always being my escape, my alternate reality.”

On co-parenting

The father of Brenda’s baby girl; popular rapper and singer Juliani during a recent interview had only good things to say about her. He said that he respected her and revealed that they have a wonderful relationship bringing up their daughter. He also mentioned that he was happy, content and not looking for love.
