Kenya’s third president Mwai Kibaki has passed on. Beyond his legacies as a political figure and a silent millionaire, Kibaki remains to be the funniest president Kenya has ever had.
He is known for stealing shows during speeches, church functions, campaigns and even funerals by cracking jokes to the attendees.
Maybe, if Mwai Kibaki was not an economist or a president, he would be giving the likes of Kevin Hart, Hassan Minaj, and Tiffany Hadish a run for their money. For being ever witty, Kibaki stole the hearts of many Kenyans, his quotes and jokes being shared all over social media.
In the comedy planet, Kibaki will be remembered for funny phrases he used to utter like “pumbavu,” “What the hell,” “bure kabisa,” “ooh yes,”and “hapanaaa.” These phrases punctuated his speeches, whether official or not. For instance, if he was not agreeing with something, he would use ‘hapanaa,” and if he found what you were doing foolish, he would say, “what the hell?”
During Mutula Kilonzo’s funeral, Mwai Kibaki was given a chance to speak. While he praised the late Mutula Kilonzo for his servant leadership, he could not leave without cracking a joke, something that seemed to be a skill under his belt.
When finishing his speech he said, “I came a little bit late for no good reason,” something that sent people present into laughter.
Here are other hilarious statements Mwai Kibaki said in his reign as Kenya’s third president;
“Hii mvua itakuwa ni kidogo…ata gari yangu naona inatoroka yeye bure. Mwambie arudi nyuma. Ni pumbavu kabisa.”
“Na kuna mwenye ni mama au ni baba hapa angali anajikuna akitembea mbele ya watu, hana aibu. Mtu kama huyo ni bure kabisa! Anahitaji kutwangwa makofi!”
“Sio lazima kila siku ya pili au ya tatu, eti lazima u-produce mtoto. What the hell? Hapanaa. Hio ni kukosa adabu.”
His comments on people asking the government to solve their problems, referring to drinking alcohol as “kukula pombe,” and many other social-political issues were always hilarious. It seemed that there was no crowd he failed to make laugh. Which quote do you remember him for? Comment below
