December is usually characterized by a lot of travelling but this year extra measures are to be considered because Covid-19 is still here with us. Your own security and health starts with you so here are tips that ensure you are safe in whatever means you are travelling with.
1. Mask Up
Always have a mask on when out in public as they reduce potential exposure of the virus from people even if they seem asymptomatic. Your mask should be worn properly too. Make sure it covers your nose, mouth and chin at all times for maximum protection. Clean your hands before and after wearing your mask and ensure you dispose it off appropriately. For convenience you can buy a box of masks and travel with it so that they are accessible at any given time.
2. Disinfect Every Surface
We cannot travel in a sterile bubble but sanitizing/disinfecting the surfaces that we come into contact with can reduce the spread of the virus and make us healthy. You can carry and use sanitizing wipes or disinfectants to clean door handles, handrails, seats, seat covers and tray tables when using public transport. Disposable latex gloves could also come in handy and you should get rid of them appropriately after use too. If you will be staying in a hotel make sure all the countertops, sinks and toilet flushers are also disinfected. After doing all that make sure your hands are properly washed. Make sure you always have shoes on when in a hotel even if there is a carpet. You can wear slippers or flip-flops while in your room. You do not know how many people have been there so you cannot go walking barefoot.
3. Maintaining a Social Distance
Make sure there is a physical distance of between 2 meters between you and the next person on the booking lines, waiting lounges and boarding zones. You can also do online bookings to minimize on-person contact. Many companies have provided an email or website where you can do so. Choose an off-peak day to travel. Most people like travelling on the weekend so Monday-Thursday would be ideal days. Get your drinks and snacks early in advance to avoid standing in line with other people. Ensure that the transport company you are using has measures in place to allow for social distancing too for maximum safety.
4. Use Cashless Payment
Money is one of the dirtiest things as it moves from a lot of hands. It is advisable to use online banking or MPESA payments when booking or paying for anything while travelling. Many places have also Business Till/Paybill numbers that you can use for payments after getting your services.
5. Do Your Research
Look up your desired destination and check the Covid status of the region. The more the number of cases the higher the chances of you getting infected. Check the area requirements and policies for the recently travelled such as mandatory tests and the necessary health documents required. Look up the area public health websites for any necessary and helpful information. Restrictions and policies might also change during your travel and stay so be flexible so that you adapt.
After travelling ensure the necessary prevention tips like wearing your mask, sanitizing and maintaining a social distance are maintained. Make sure that you get tested for the virus even if you seem asymptomatic.
