Germany's Manuel Neuer after surprise UNL 6-0 loss to Spain |17th Nov 2020

Germany’s (6-0) defeat to Spain in last night’s UEFA Nations League (UNL) Competition had their star keeper, Manuel Neuer breaking a record. The only twist is that the record is rather undesirable to a keeper of his calibre and experience.

This was the first time the 34-year-old goalkeeper conceded 6 goals in a single match for club or country. This was also his record appearance, as he became the most capped (96) of all the German keepers. The Bayern Munich shot stopper conceded a hat-trick from Man city’s 20-year-old winger, Ferran Torres.

Germany are now out of the competition and Spain are through to the semi-finals. The Spaniards will find out which country they will face after the Semi-Finals draw on Thursday 3rd December. The last Nations League matches for this international break will be played tonight before the club games resume this weekend.

Although Germany is out of the competition, their former most capped goalkeeper, Sepp Maier still believes in Neuer. In an interview with news agency Dpa, he is quoted saying “It’s about time. It has been 41 years since I set the record and I congratulate him.” Maier retired at 35 and says that he doesn’t see Neuer removing his gloves for good anytime soon, as he is still good.

Neuer’s goalkeeping prowess is evident in his style of play at the age of 34. Italy’s Buffon is still playing at the age of 42, so we can still see some years in Germany’s World Cup winning goalkeeper; despite being between the post in Germany’s biggest defeat in a competitive fixture, and their biggest loss since a 6-0 beating by Austria in May 1931.
