Jowie in court

It looks like Joseph Irungu alias Jowie will be spending his second Christmas behind bars however, the sudden disappearance of Jacque Maribe's photos from his Instagram account is what has caused jitters and left tongues wagging.

Jowie’s account has been inactive since his arrest, it is odd that on Friday the 29th of November, after almost a year of dormancy, Maribe’s photos were mysteriously deleted and replaced with a single image of Jowie with an unidentified woman. Many Kenyans are in agreement that their relationship is on its death bed.

Love turned stale…

On June 30th 2018, Jowie went down on one knee at a city restaurant and proposed to the broadcast journalist in the presence of their friends. The love birds still on the high of their engagement were arrested in September 2018 in connection to the gruesome murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani. Maribe, a former Citizen TV anchor, was freed on a Sh2 million bond in October of the same year. Mr. Irungu was on other hand deemed a flight risk and denied bail.

 Life in prison…

Remanded at Kamiti Maximum Prison, Jowie’s account had consequently been frozen in time. It remains unknown how the images were deleted, given that the man, in an interview with a local station, revealed he is only allowed five minutes of talk time to his family via the communal remand phone every day. He also has no access to the internet while in jail. Either way, the writings are on the wall for all and sundry.

Life in the penitentiary is twice as hard for him since he is in solitary confinement. Jowie does not get to interact with other inmates neither can he have visitors for more than 10 minutes. His confinement status prohibits him from being transported to hospital in case he falls ill. In the interview he said losing the people he thought were his friends was on one the most painful experiences.

Now is when I know people who care, people who matter, and people who have my back…

Mr. Irungu made a fresh application to be freed on bond, saying protected witnesses have already testified and his siblings would accommodate him. Justice James Wakiaga will rule on the application in February 2020.
